Samba in Cambridge

Acro Iris are the cambridge community Samba Band and Thudbox are a smaller ensemble that perform in clubs, pubs and festivals.

Performance

Acro Iris is a more relaxed environment compared to Thudbox as they perform in front of audiences in a theatre or festival.

Choreography

Thudbox have a more enhanced choreograph then Acro Iris, they get around and move on stage where as Acro Iris just stand there bobbing up a down to the music. They do hand and arm movements when performing.

Costume

Both have different and unique costumes Acro iris wear t-shirts to represent their band. Thudbox for the girls wore dresses dark coloured dresses and also the Drums in Thodbox’s Performance have lights on that flicker when they perform.

Lighting

The Lighting in Thudbox’s video is dark as they are in a theatre and have stage lighting, Where as Acro Iris are performing outside they have day light.

reflecting

On the night it wasnt as good as expecting as not many people turned up for the event, we think this as a group because the Junction didnt help advitise the event they could of advitised it on their website as many people look at that we think more people would of attended with the help of the junction advitising it as well as us putting up posters. As not many people came to the performance some of the junctions facilities that were open didnt need to be such as the cloakroom only 2 people used that through out the whole night, which this could be a waste of the junctions time and money paying someone to be their for hours when no one really used the facility. The junction managers Alan and other members of staff said our imput was good and that we listened well and our performance on the night as well as work expierence was very organised and we followed their rules and regulations.

Overall if we were to do this project again i think that their should just be us a group instead of another college as well because through this event it was hard to get in contact with the fashion students as they had set days of being at college and so have we. Or if we had more meetings with the students as well we could of done a bit better on the planning other then having just two meetings with them as i felt this wasnt enough meeting and planning time together to put on such a big event as what we were putting on. I found the lighting could of been better if we discussed it with the other college as well because their Fashion show would of needed extra or different lighting compared to bands but as we had limited contact with them it was hard to guess what they would of needed for the lighting as there had to be a plan for the night the night before so the techintions could set it all up. I feel also next time we could avitise the event more by asking the Junction to put a bit up on their website for more publicity as there was nothing from the junction.

Festival Three

Vans Warped Tour 

Vans Warped Tour is a tour festival that travels all across Americas states instead of being at one place. As america is a large country they have roughly 44 events within 30 states of America. Tour dates start from 9th April till 15th August. The festival holds many music tents as well as main stage tent and various stalls around the festival. They have a huge list of with around 134 guests confirmed for the tour in 2010 varying from You me at six, The all american rejects, Enter Shikari, Suicide Silence, Polar bear club, Attack Attack and After Midnight Project. The sort of Audience this tour festival will attract is those interested in, 'Emo', 'Heavy' and 'Screamo' Music. Warped Tour is sponsored by Vans and a further 52 companies including Myspace, Fuse, Monster energy, Skull Candy and Wonka. Also tickets help fund the Warped Tour.

Strawberry Fair Cambridge

The Strawberry Fair is held on the first saturday of every June and it is found at Cambridge's Midsummer Common in the town centre. The festival holds a various amount of stalls, Performance stages, Children's tents and alcohol tents. The festival is free and is about Music, Theatre, Art and crafts. The festival is for any ages, Children, Young people and mainly teenagers and young people than the older generation. The strawberry fair is a volunteered festival run by Cambridge residents. The Strawberry Fair can hold thousands of people throughout the day as it is an open event anyone can attend and leave when they wish.

Festival One

Reading!

Reading Festival is held every year around Augusts bank holiday weekend. This year for 2010 the festival is on from 27th August till the 29th August. The Festival is he

ld at Richfield Avenue, Reading, UK. The festival has a variety of line up bands and various tents that bands will be playing in, Such as a main tent and little tents for those acts that aren't as big that would play on the main stage. There are seven stages throughout Reading Festival. Artists that would play on main stage would vary from bands such as Paramore, Blink 182, Lost prophets & Dizzee rascal. Acts that would perform on the little stages would be acts such as Enter Shikari, Klaxons and Foals. The festival is for those who enjoy the whole Festival outing, Those who are interested in any of the line up acts playing but most of all for the people that enjoy 'indie', 'heavy' and 'hip-hop' acts. 

Some of Reading is funded through volunteers that agree to help out at the Festival, For this the age is 18+ and will have to be able to follow strict rules such as arriving on time for meetings about the work you will be covering and to report to your supervisor every 2 hours on shift to tell if needed what has happened or happening danger or emergency wise. Most of the festivals funding is from tickets and entry fees and sponsors. They are supported by BBC Radio One, NME, Tuborg, Gaymers, Pepsi Max, Relentless and viagogo.

Interview with Rik

I interviewed Rik on Friday 19th March.

 How did the band form? What brought you together? And when?

we were friends since secondary school so its been a very long time,we also used to play as a band but doing covers and such till the band properly formed in 2005.

What is the best part about being in a band?

You get to hang out with your mates, have fun and we love making music.

Do you like the publicity you get? If any?

we have had reviews from NME so far.

What do you hate about it? Do you find being with the boys it can get too much in your face?

Yeah, when you are with the boys for a long period of time it can get on your nerves but we get through it as we are such good friends.

How did you feel when you released the single 'I feel the need'?

our first song was released without rushing and we got publicity for our new single before coming out it went along smoothy without rushing and feeling the pressure. We feel comfortable with making their next single.

Do you have any future plans for the band? More releases? A Tour? 

We are hoping to tour in the summer time maybe september time, as well as making their next new single for the end of may, with lots of singles throughout the year to keep the band alive and active instead of making a single then not being heard for a while.

VIOLET BONES are a four piece indie pop band, Si Dartford, Rik Hudson, Stuart Gill and Oz Sim. They are from Cambridgeshire and perform in local venues as well as over the country. 

 They started to write their music in 2005 when the band formed together but have been friends for many years before hand. As many artists write about their lives nothing stops them writing about their lives being young men living in a world full of recession, dreams and of course...girls!

They have performed countless number of gigs up and down the country, including Machester’s in the city showcase and supporting pink heroes New York Dolls. 

They released their brand new single ‘I feel the need’ on 15th February 2010 earlier this year, which has lead them to more fans and followers.

Today we start a new category in the Scene Project, This section is about music, Clubs and Scene and Dance. 

I Will be looking at Violet Bones as one of the member in this band is a member of long road sixth form so i will be writing an article about him and his performances within the band ect. They are a band located in Cambridgeshire and often attend local venues such as the junction to perform on a regular basis to get their name out. They have recently just released a single 'I feel the need' Which was released the 15th February as of the poster below showing the information and where it can be purchased.

Research on The Junction

The junction it self is divided into three separate rooms Junction one,two and three.

Junction one:

This is used for big gigs and performances through out the night of a show as the space and room is big and can fit around 700 people in total. 

Junction two: 

This is used for drama performances and can fit around 250 people. 

Junction three: 

This is a small room that is often used for work shops or as a classroom. 

The Junction has target audiences for specific things such as gigs played in junction one are usually for the younger generation 'Teenagers' or 'mid 20s-30s' at gigs such as 'fiver nights' and 'warning' and also specific gigs such as bands. Where as junction two is audience is anyone depending on the performance that is being held but it can vary from Children's performances to Single acts. 

The junction has the same to offer as the corn exchange, they both have gigs and performances but the junction can have a gig on and another performance at the same time as they have different venue rooms. The Arts theatre is just for performing arts where as the junction and cambridge corn exchange have a variety of gigs and performances that they hold. 

As a regular user at the junction i find it easy to access, reasonably well kept at a time of a gig and has very good security.

Dress Rehearsal

As i was ill during dress rehearsal i cant comment on how it went but as i know what the costumes are i can comment on what it could be like. I think that the masks are a good idea because it can be used if you are inbarased and dont want people to see them, Also i think the t-shirts are a good idea as it shows we are a group band.

Risk assessment

it is important to do a risk assessment before you travel somewhere with college, as problems could occur and things could go wrong, health and safety needs to be checked when going anywhere. 

The impact it has made on the performance day due to the change has been a big impact, as therefore we have had to email all the people attending through the face book group to remind them about it and that the day has changed, and also have we have emailed people such as kiss fm and heart radio its a bit confusing and awkward emailing them again telling them the date change as they may of made plans to visit.

Campaign

Here is a print screen of my Facebook group. i have a total of 53 members so far that have signed up and agreed with my campaign, 53 out of the 560 friends i have on facebook this is a total of  roughly 25% of my friends agree.  Over all this is a low percentage.

Reflection on campaign day

The campaign day went well, The plan for the day was to get as many people interested in my campaign of if not interested make awareness of the campaign. I went into town to do my campaign as there would be a range of teenagers in town that either dont have college or go to have lunch in town. 

If i was to do this again i would make sure i perhaps where the t-shirt i designed as it would attract more attention from the public, and i would also hand out leaflets maybe to get peoples attention to sign up to the facebook group. 

plan for petition day

Today i am going to stand in the college cafe and ask as many 16-19 year olds if they agree with my campaign. I will be doing this for just over an hour to see how many people i get as during this time it will be the colleges break, so the majority of students will be located somewhere around the cafe. I will talk about the current situation about EMA and then i will discuss what could happen in the future and what everyone agrees too.
